Religious Tours of Mathura-Vrindavan

Mathura and Vrindavan are collectively known as Brajbhoomi. Religious tours of Mathura-Vrindavan means visiting the sacred place of Brajbhoomi. Lord Krishna was born and brought up in Mathura-Vrindavan. Mathura is the nucleus of Brajbhoomi, while Vrindavan is the city of temples. Mathura is situated in Uttar Pradesh at a distance of around 58 km from Agra. The city of temples is just 15 km from Mathura.

Religious tours of Mathura-Vrindavan includes various religious places like temples, ghatas and kunds in and around Mathura and Vrindavan. Shri Krishna Janmabhumi is a temple consisting of a small prison which is supposed to be the birth place of Lord Krishna. It is a major pilgrimage shrine. Dwarkadhish Temple is very well known for the colorful festivals that are celebrated here. It was built by Seth Gokuldass of Gwalior in early 19th century.

Radha Madana-Mohana Temple is a famous temple which is included in the religious tours of Mathura-Vrindavan. It was the first temple of Vrindavan established by Srila Sanatana Gosvami. Banke-Bihari temple of Vrindavan was built in 1864 and is a famous temple all over India. The divinity of Banke-Bihari was discovered by Swami Haridasa in Nidhuvana. Swami Haridasa was the guru of famous musician Tansen.

Vrindavan's one of the luxurious temples is Jaipur Temple. It was built in 1917 by the Maharaja of Jaipur. Sawai Madhav. The huge pillars are attractively carved from a single solid rock. The elaborately fashioned marble on the altar reminds of Mughal period. Radharamana temple is the famous temple of Gopala Bhatta Gosvami and is one of the names of Shri Krishna. One of the most important pilgrimage shrines worth seeing while religious tours of Mathura-Vrindavan is Radha Damodara Temple. The original hand carved deity by Rupa Gosvami was gifted to his disciple Jiva Gosvami, who built this temple. This spot was the bhajana place of Rupa Gosvami and formerly was in the middle of Seva Kunj. Jugal Kisore Temple of Vrindavan is one of the oldest temples. This temple is situated on the Kesi Ghata and sometimes referred as Kesi Ghata temple.

Kesi Ghat is a famous ghat as aarti to Yamuna is held here every evening. This is the place where Kesi demon, which appeared in the form of a gigantic horse, was killed by Lord Krishna. Kaliya Ghat is the ghat where Lord Krishna jumped from a big Kadamba tree into the Yamuna river to chastise the Kaliya serpent. Vishram Ghat is the most important bathing ghat on the Yamuna. It is the ghat where Lord Krishna took rest after killing Kansa.

Religious tours of Mathura-Vrindavan can not be said to be complete without a visit to the kunds at Mathura-Vrindavan. In ancient times, there were around 159 kunds, among which only few survive. Those are Shiv Tal, famous Potara Kund, Balbhadra, Saraswati Kunds and Manasi Ganga Kund.
