Dehradun is situated in the Uttaranchal state on India. In fact, Dehradun is the capital of this newly formed state. Dehradun was earlier known Kedar Khand and is the part of Garhwal Himalayan region.
There are many tourist places in Dehradun worth visiting such as the Forest Research Institute, which is the main center of research and planning related flora and fauna. It is located on the Kaulagarh Road. It is the biggest forest based product training institute. Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology is another place worth visiting. The museum here houses rock samples, fossils and semi precious stones discovered in the Himalayan ranges.
Tapkeshwar Temple is a cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located on the banks of seasonal river in Dehradun. Besides the river there are steps leading to the temple. Tapovan is another sacred site on Dehradun-Rajpur road. It is believed that Guru Dronacharya underwent his penance here. Lakshman Sidh is a temple about 12 km away. The younger brother of Lord Ram, Lakshman underwent his penance at this place for killing the demon king Ravan.
A Tibetan Gompa known as Shakya Center is embellished with ornate frescoes. There is a center of Tibetan medicine near it. Malsi Deer Park is national park at distance of about 10 km from Dehradun. The park has collection of neelgai, deer and variety of birds. There is also a mini zoo with a children's park. Rajaji National Park is another famous park known for its barking deer, elephants, sambar, leopards, peafowl and birds. This park is situated at approximate distance of 23 km. Robbers Cave is a wonderful picnic spot also known as Guchu Pani. One of the nature's strange phenomena can be seen here. The water goes underground and reappears at a distance of few meters. This peaceful cave is encircled by hills and is a favorite gateway for those who need a quiet place to spend their time. Sahastradhara is around 14 km away from Dehradun. It is a cold sulphur water spring. The water of this spring is said to have medicinal value and the power of curing various diseases.
The Jolly Grant Airport is the nearest airport. Excellent rail network links Dehradun to all major cities of India. Road network between Dehradun and other places is also good. Regular buses ply from various places towards the city. Local transportation is convenient and is accounted by auto rickshaws, taxi, cycle rickshaws, tempos, tongas and bus service.
Dehradun is a beautiful place with natural beauty including wildlife, hills, picturesque valleys and rivers. Apart from this, it also has many temples and research centers, which make this place a major tourist attraction.
