Haridwar, which lies at the foothills of the mighty Himalayas, on the western bank of the river Ganges, is also known as Ganga Dwara. In the Puranas or the holy scriptures, Haridwar was referred to as Mayapuri kshetra and is considered as one of the seven holy cities, which must be visited by every Hindu.
