Ranikhet

Ranikhet literally means the 'Queen's Field'. It is so named because it is said that Rani Padmini, who was the queen of Raja Sudhardev, loved this place so much that she made it her home. Ranikhet is the beautiful and charming hill resort located in the Uttaranchal state of India. The lush green oak and pine forests, attractive flora and eye catching view of Himalayas, particularly the snow-capped peak of Nanda Devi, are the major features of this majestic town.

There are many places of interest, which draw a number of tourists to this place. Jhula Devi Temple is a very popular temple with innumerable bells tied here by the devotees. This temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. There is even a temple dedicated to Lord Rama nearby. Chaubatia comprises of four fruit gardens, located at a distance of about 10 km from Ranikhet. Here there is also a Government Fruit Research Center. An artificial lake, Bhaludam, is approximately 3 km away from here. Uppat is a place situated at a distance of around 6 km from Ranikhet, which houses a nine-hole golf course amidst fruit orchards. Near Uppat there is a place called Kallika, which is known for its temple dedicated to Goddess Kali.

Nanda Devi Mela, held at Nanda Devi Temple in Ranikhet, is a religious fair, celebrated in the memory of Goddess Nanda and Goddess Sunanda. Almora, located at a distance of about 50 km from this city, can be a part of your excursions from Ranikhet. It is a famous health resort and offer panoramic views of Himalayas. Dwarahat is another place worth seeing as it is filled with ancient sculptures. It is just about 38 km away from Ranikhet. Several other quaint places that can be visited from Ranikhet are Sitalakhet, Tarikhet and Khairna. Other things to do in Ranikhet include enjoying golf at a golf course, trekking and shopping. You must buy 'baal mithai' that is the local sweet, made up of condensed and concentrated milk embellished with little sugar beads. Singaudi is another sweet specialty of the region, which is rich in sugar and ghee. Shawls from Ranikhet are also very well known.

The airport of Pant Nagar is the nearest airport to this place. The railheads that are near to this place are Kathgodam and Ramnagar. Ranikhet is well connected by roads, to the other important places around. Accommodation facility is also good at this hill station as it has many good hotels for accommodating its guests. Some names of hotels are like Woodsvilla Resort, Parwati Inn, The West View Hotel and Chevron Rosemount.

Overall, Ranikhet is an excellent hill resort with scenic beauty and many attractive features like ancient temples, majestic view of the Himalayas, picnic spots, adventurous treks and quiet strolls.
