Rishikesh means the hair of the sage. It is a holy city for Hindus located in the foothills of the Himalayas, in the Uttaranchal state of India. It is the starting point for traveling to the Char Dhams in India. Rishikesh even means the person who has conquered his senses. The river Ganga flows through the city and has many temples on its banks. Tourists are also attracted to this city due to numerous yoga centers here. It is belief that the meditation at this place leads to attainment of salvation.
Several places of interest include mainly the temples from this area. Bharat Mandir is a well known temple constructed by Adi Guru Shankaracharya. This temple stands in the old town on the Ganges bank. The inner sanctrum enshrines an exquisitely carved idol of Lord Vishnu. Triveni Ghat is the major ghat in the town. Every evening Ganga aarti is performed at this ghat and pilgrims take holy dips in the waters caressing this ghat. Rishikund is an ancient place in Rishikesh, which is close to Triveni Ghat. Geeta Bhawan is one of the oldest temples of this area. The walls of this temple depict the stories of the famous Indian epics Ramayana and Mahabharata.
Another well known temple complex and ashram of Rishikesh is Parmarth Niketan. Ganga Aarti ans Hawan are organized by this ashram on Parmarth ghat every evening. Tera Manzil Temple is a multi storey temple complex enshrining the idols of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. The top floor of the temple gives an excellent view of area around. Kunja Puri Temple is one of the important temples in Shivalik ranges. It is a superb place to watch sunrise and sunset. Vashishta Goofa is a peaceful cave where famous saint Vashishta meditated on the banks of River Ganga.
Rishikesh also offers various sports for adventure lovers like hiking, trekking, water rafting and canoeing. The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, located at about 35 km from the Rishikesh. Haridwar is the nearest railway station to this place. Road network is good between this place and other cities within Uttaranchal and outside.
This holy city of Rishikesh is favorite place for pilgrims as well as sport lovers.
