The autonomous Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology is an institute that came into existence in the year 1968. In the earlier times it was located in Delhi. In the year 1976, the institute was reallocated to Dehradun from the city of Delhi. Professor D.N. Wadia was the mastermind behind the establishment of this institute. Owing to this the institute has been christened after him. Earlier the institute was known only as the Himalayan Geology institute.
The institute studies and explores various topics like the Bio-stratigraphy, Sedimentology, Geomorphology, and Structure and Tectonics. This institute has the honour of having a national laboratory with all the latest and modern equipments. The institute has about 61 scientists and 141 administration and technical staff. The institute also has some students who study over here. The strength of these students is 40. The various equipments housed by the laboratory are efficiently managed by the staff.
Apart from the famous laboratory, the huge library of the Wadia Institute of Himalayan Geology is a treat for all the avid book lovers. It boasts of about 25,000 books which comprise of the journals and records of the various conferences held here. You can avail of 58 national and 98 international journals related to science. It is indeed a one of its kind library. The library is equipped with all the latest facilities and is computerized, which also simplifies your search for the books.
In addition to these, the institute also houses a museum. This museum includes all the things related to geology like the maps, charts and different models.
