Haridwar is considered the holiest of towns in India and it is also one of the oldest cities. You can even buy some trinkets like rings and necklaces and old coins from many old people who are selling them along the roadside. Auspicious stones can be purchased from one of the many shops which are in the city and a little bargaining will not do any harm.
In the evenings at 7 pm sharp you must visit Har Ki pauri where the aarthi for Mother Ganges is performed with reverence. Lamps are lit and allowed to float on the river, thereby transforming the whole place into a fairyland. The whole area is filled with signing of songs by hundreds of people while the aarthi goes on. It is a must see spectacle, where music rants through the air, and devotion permeates the atmosphere. Overall, what to do in Haridwar can never be a question; at best it can serve as an excuse.
