What to do in Haridwar

What to do in Haridwar

Haridwar is considered the holiest of towns in India and it is also one of the oldest cities. It is ideally located on the lower slopes of the mighty Himalayan Mountains and this is the place where it is believed that Ganges meets the earth. This is a city which is referred to as the gateway to heaven and is a city which is always bustling with hectic activity with its numerous ashrams, temples, ghats or river fronts, markets etc. This city becomes the venue for millions of people, saints and spiritual gurus and even charlatons who arrive at the Kumbha Mela from all over the country and abroad, which takes place once in twelve years.

Many foreign tourists who arrive at this city for the first time are amazed and dumbfounded when they get to see thousands of people moving about the streets from one holy site to another. So if you are a tourist visiting this holy city, the question of what to do in Haridwar shouldn't figure in your mind, as there are plenty to do in Haridwar.

There are many things which tourist can do here in Haridwar. There are many ancient temples in the city and surrounding it, so a visit to all these temples would be the first priority in order to feel the spiritual essence of the city. One can also go trekking on the mountain slopes to visit some rare temples situated high on top of the mountains. Trekking itself would prove to be very soothing to the spirits and the soul. Haridwar by itself is a place where anyone would be automatically transformed to a religious fervour because of the intense spiritual activity going around in the town.

Another great thing to do while in Haridwar is to take holy dips in the sacred mighty Ganga river, an act which is believed to be pious one. Tourists can also pay visits to the various ashrams which are located in and around the town and learn some spiritual lessons from a great master. You can also take up some yoga lessons while you are here as there are many willing teachers of yoga who would be more than willing to give you a lesson or two in the various postures.

Haridwar is a place where one can purchase many holy precious stones and beads. You can buy some of the Rudraskha Malas or holy beads to do your chants. You can even buy some trinkets like rings and necklaces and old coins from many old people who are selling them along the roadside. Auspicious stones can be purchased from one of the many shops which are in the city and a little bargaining will not do any harm.

In the evenings at 7 pm sharp you must visit Har Ki pauri where the aarthi for Mother Ganges is performed with reverence. Lamps are lit and allowed to float on the river, thereby transforming the whole place into a fairyland. The whole area is filled with signing of songs by hundreds of people while the aarthi goes on. It is a must see spectacle, where music rants through the air, and devotion permeates the atmosphere. Overall, what to do in Haridwar can never be a question; at best it can serve as an excuse.
