Ranikhet is a fantastic place for holidays that is located in the northern part of the Uttaranchal state of India. The place acquired its name because of queen of Raja Sukhardev, who upon visiting this place fell in love with it and decided to settle here. This charming hill station gives the most majestic view of the snow- capped Himalayas. It is a cantonment area with dense thick forests and beautiful landscapes. There are many temples in and around Ranikhet such as Binsar Mahadev, which is an important temple in this region, located at a distance of about 19 km from Ranikhet. This architectural marvel of a temple is surrounded by dense cedar forests. A gentle stream flows nearby the temple. This temple enshrines the idols of Ganesh, Maheshmardini and Har Gauri. This temple was built in memory of Bindu, by his son King Pithu. This temple is also called Bindeshwar Temple. Jhoola Devi Temple is dedicated to Goddess Durga. It is located around 7 km away from Ranikhet, on Chaubatia road. There are cluster of bells tied in this temple, echo of these bells can be heard from a distance. There is a temple dedicated to Lord Ram nearby.

Mankameshwar Temple is another interesting temple close to Nar Singh Maidan. It was constructed by Kumaon regiment for military use in Ranikhet. There is even a Gurudwara and the shawl factory nearby. Hairakhan Temple is about 4 km away from the main town. It is famous temple dedicated to Hairakhan Baba. Baba died in year 1984 but his ashram here is well maintained.
Several other places of interest around Ranikhet are there, that will never ever let you wonder what to do in Ranikhet. Chaubatia has gardens, fruit orchards and the Government Fruit Research Center. Tourists are mainly drawn to this place because of the view of Himalayas. The glistening view of Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nandaghunti and Nilkanth peaks bring an uncommon feeling to your heart. It is one of the largest horticulture gardens, which spreads over an area of about 265 acres. From here, just at a distance of about 3 km, there is an artificial lake called Bhaludam. It is a popular picnic spot.
Upat is a paradise for golfers. Here there is one of the best nine-hole golf courses in the country. There are private orchards, dense forests and Himalayan ranges, which add beauty to this place. Nearby there is a place called Kallika, which has a temple of Goddess Kali. Katarmal is a place at a distance of about 25 km. Here a beautiful trek leads to one of the two sun temples. One can even reach the temple by trekking. This ancient temple is a creation of the 12th century.
Shopping in Ranikhet is a different experience. One should buy 'baal mithai'; a sweet made up of condensed milk, sprinkled with little sugar beads. This sweet is a local specialty. Another sweet worth tasting is 'singaudi', which is rich in sugar and ghee. Shawl is also an excellent item that can be bought from here.
