Known for the best skiing slope in Asia, Auli is located in the state of Uttaranchal. The skiing slope is bordered by oak and coniferous trees, due to which the speed of the wind reduces and makes it an ideal place for skiing. Auli is a grazing land stretched over an area of about 6 km. In the monsoons the land is carpeted with a variety of flowers.
In the front of Auli stands Nanda Devi Peak, which is one of the highest peaks in India. Apart from this, other peaks that can be seen are Neelkanth, Hathigauri, Eravath and Comet mountains. Several places of interest in and around Auli are Joshimath, which is about 12 km away from Auli and has many memorials and temples. Adi Guru Shankaracharya on his visit to this place founded Joshimath. Another attraction here is the ropeway between Joshimath and Auli. It is about 4 km long and is called Rajju. This is the longest and the second highest ropeway in Asia. Two passenger cabins are used in this ropeway.
Gurso Bugyal is located at a distance of about 3 km from Auli and is a huge meadow spread in the middle of mixed forest of conifers and oaks. One can use ropeway to reach Joshimath. There is a small lake Chattrakund located at approximate distance of 1 km from Gurso Bugyal. It is in the middle of the jungle. Saildhar Tapovan is at a distance of about 15 km on the Joshimath road. It is a small village with many hot water springs. There are even hot water fountains with the temperature of water at boiling point. Kwanri Bugyal is an interesting place for trekkers and is at a distance of about 12 km from Gurso Bugyal.
Auli often organizes the National Winter Games in the months of February and March. Airport of
Dehradun is the nearest airport to Auli. Railhead nearest to this place is Haridwar. Road network between Auli and other major places is good. Hence one can easily reach Auli.
Auli offers various sports and beautiful sceneries making it a major tourist attraction of Uttaranchal.
