Uttarkashi is an important pilgrimage center for Hindus bordered by snow capped ranges. This district is located in the northern side of Uttaranchal State in India. It is also a land of origination of the two rivers Ganga and Yamuna. This beautifully located place has captivating features like green landscape, lakes, terraced hills, waterfalls and springs.

There are various temples and sacred places in Uttarkashi such as Vishwanath Temple, which is one of the prime pilgrimage destinations in the district. It is an ancient temple and it is believed that it was constructed by Parshuram. It was later on renovated by the wife of Sudarshan Shah, Maharani Khaneti, in 1857. The temple enshrines a shivling. Another famous temple is the Shakti Temple, which is located just opposite to Vishwanath Temple. A 6 meter high trident in this temple is a major attraction. It is believed that this trident is made up of copper in the lower part and iron in the upper part. The epics even say that it was thrown at devils by Durga Goddess.

Gangnani is a quite place popular for its hot water springs and the views of Himalayan ranges. These springs are called Rishikund. There is a temple built near by, which is dedicated to sage Parasara. Located at a distance of about 13 km from Uttarkashi is the beautiful place known as Maneri. The dam built here on the River Bhagirathi has made it an important tourist destination. The lake formed due to the dam adds to the beauty of this place.

Dayara Bugyal is a large meadow with a small lake located at a distance of about 32 km from Uttarkashi. One can reach Barsu village by a vehicle and from there about 3 km trek takes you to this enchanting place. The beautiful views of Himalayan ranges from this place make it a memorable trek. A trek of about 30 km from this place and you will reach Dodi Tal. Dodi Tal is a lake with wide variety of fishes. No wonder it is a favorite for anglers. Another lake called Nachiketa Tal is located at a distance of approximately 29 km from the main town. It has a small temple, surrounded by greenery all around.

Harsil is the charming Bhagirathi valley enclosing within itself all the moods of nature. This place is located at a distance of about 72 km from Uttarkashi. Har ki Dun is a popular destination for trekkers as it has mountainous landscapes and dense forests. Excursion can be made from this town to a wild life sanctuary called as Govind National Park. It spreads over the area of 953 square kilometers. The park offers much to its visitors such as rare birds, animals, snow capped peaks and glaciers. The park also has wide collection of flora.

'Magh Mela' is a special occasion held on 14th January every year. It is a big fair held in Uttarkashi and attended by large number of pilgrims. Pilgrims take a dip in holy water of River Bhagirathi along with the idol of the deity of their village. Several other places worth visiting are Sat Tal, Gangotri, Yamunotri, Kedar Tal, Nandanvan and Tapovan.

Uttarkashi is a major pilgrimage center of India, which is equated with Kashi and Varanasi. This picturesque town is the district headquarter with beautiful location on the bank of Bhagirathi River.
