Valley of Flowers is located in the Chamoli district of the Uttaranchal. On the way back from an expedition to Mount Kamet, an English mountaineer named Frank Smythe lost his way and reached the paradisal Bhyundar Valley. The valley was bordered by snow capped mountain ranges and carpet of flowers. The valley was blooming with near about 500 species of flowers. He authored a book named 'The Valley of Flowers' due to which the valley became tourist attraction.
This beautiful valley stretching over an area of approximately 87.5 square kilometers was declared as national park in the year 1982. River Pushpavati and other many waterfalls flow through the valley enhancing the beauty of this valley. Most of the species of flowers found here have medicinal value. Some of the species of flowers that one can find here are include Anemone, Marsh marigold, Geranium, Potentilla, Prinula, Geum, Lilium, Asters, Corydalis, Ranunculus, Inula, Campanula, Arisaema, Morina, Braham kamal, Pedicularis, Bistorta, Impatiens, Anaphalis, Ligularia, Saxifrages, Thermopsis, Trollius, Sibbaldia, Codonopsis, Cypripedium, Dactylorhiza, Epilobium, Strawberry, Rhododendrons and numerous others. Some more types of flowers are also found here in various seasons like Senecio jacquemotiamus, Ligularia amplexicaulis, Aconitum hookeri, Potentilla atrosanguinea, Sedum ewersii, Thalictrum reniforme, Stachys sericee, Bistorta affinis, Pedicularis hoffmeistri, Nepeta connata, Swertia hookeri, Gaultheria erichophy, Gentiana ornata, Angelica cyelocarpa, Codonopsis affinis and Leontopodium jacotianum.
Apart from the wide variety of flowers, the Valley of Flowers also has some fauna like musk deer, butterfly, Himalayan bear, blue sheep, snow leopard, Himalayan mouse hare and several Himalayan birds. The best time to visit this place is between June and October. During the rest of the year, heavy snows block the way to this place. It is best to visit this park in August or September as the monsoon showers turn this enchanting valley into a mass of blooms.
A trek from Govind Ghat to the Valley of Flowers is about 17 km walk. There are several hotels and restaurants at Govind Ghat. Govind Ghat is easily accessible by road. The beautiful Valley of Flowers gives you a pleasant experience of studying such a wide variety of flowers
