Yamunotri

One of the char dhams, the four Hindu pilgrimages, Yamunotri is located in the State of Uttaranchal in India. It is the source of river Yamuna and the first destination of pious Char Dham trip. There is a shrine of Goddess Yamunotri at this place. It is situated on the western flank of the peak Bander Poonch. This peak is covered by snow throughput the year. However, the actual source of River Yamunotri is a lake at a distance of about 12 km from here. That lake is named as Saptrishi Kund. A tough guided trek leads you to this place.

The temple at Yamunotri is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. It is situated close to thermal springs and was built by Tehri Naresh Sudarshan Shah in 1839. Due to frequent earthquakes temple has been damaged several times. It was reconstructed by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in 19th century. This temple idol made up of black stone of Goddess Yamuna. There are hot water springs near to this temple known as Surya Kund. The temperature of the water is about 88 degree Celsius. These hot water springs are surrounded by snow covered peaks. There is a huge rock pillar, which is worshipped before entering the temple.

Hanumanchatti is another sacred place near Yamunotri, which is starting point for Dodi Tal trek. It is a place of confluence of the rivers Hanuman Ganga and Yamuna. Dodi Tal is a wonderful spot. It is a natural lake amidst thick forest of deodar, oak and rhododendron. The lake has clear water with variety of fishes and trouts. The trek to this place is favorite among the trekkers. Jankichatti is a place with another hot water springs for bathing for the pilgrims and this spot offers a spectacular sight. Sayanachatti is also a beautiful place along the banks of River Yamuna. Chamba is about 46 km away from Yamunotri. This lush green beautiful place spreads like a carpet. It is a perfect place to stop while return from Yamunotri.

Yamunotri has good bus service from all important places in the state. Dehradun is the nearest railway station and Rishikesh railway station is also an alternate option. Jolly Grant Airport of Dehradun is the nearest airport to this sacred place.

This pilgrimage center of Hindus is a wonderful place blessed with nature beauty. A large number of tourists and pilgrims visit Yamunotri every year. Trekking is the major sport activity carried out here by tourists.
