Murshidabad city is one of the ancient cities of West Bengal. This city was once the capital of Nawab who was independently ruling Bengal. Shola - pith is a white spongy wood material which is used for carving marvelous and artistic objects. Artisans and skilled workers make use of shola - pith for decorating the turbans of the bridal couple. The images of gods and goddesses exhibit the entire skills and talents of the people involved with wood carvings. Craftsmen are professionally trained and they take enough time to work on a single project. Flowery designs garlands peacock - boats and decorative head wears are some of the examples of shola - pith architecture.

Production of large quantities of brass and bell - metal utensils is being carried out in Khagra Kandy Jangipur and Berhampore. These utensils are of superior quality and they are also exported to foreign countries also. Locks and betel nut crackers are also manufactured with high quality raw materials. Plastic crockery and ceramic goods with fabulous artistic designs are also available in plenty. Silk saris are manufactured in Baluchari town in the Murshidabad city. The silk base brocaded designs and inspiring colors in Baluchari saris are very attractive and fabulous looking. Red blue green scarlet and yellow are preferably used by the silk weavers. The innovative designs in the leather handicrafts with contemporary styles are very attractive. The age old tradition of making fancy articles from cane and bamboo is also carried out even today in some of the rural districts of West Bengal.

Decorative and fine glazed ceramic products can be obtained from Brigham district in West Bengal. Toys wall hangings household potteries are painted with vibrant colors. Clay dolls and toys represent the tradition and culture of India. Horn combs, which are available in black and grey shades, are among the renowned handicrafts of Murshidabad.

Decorative hand bags, bed spreads and carpets with jute backings are manufactured in the city. Papier Mache dolls and masks with splendid designs significantly display the talents of the skilled artisans.
