Kenduli is situated at a distance of about 30 km from Shantiniketan. It is the birthplace of Bengal's first popular poet, Jaydev, who composed the famous poetic work- Geet Govinda. There are several temples in Kenduli. Kenduli is popular for its folk song festival which is conducted at the time of Makar Sankranti in mid January. It is the biggest festival of its kind in West Bengal.
Kenduli Mela is popular for the gathering of the Bauls. The Baul is a sect of wandering minstrels. They represent the unique musical tradition of West Bengal. They are identified by their saffron costumes and typical musical instrument, the Ektara. UNESCO has included them in the list of 'Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity'. Singing is the main occupation of the Baul community. One can listen to their songs, conveying fundamental philosophical view points of life with uncommon simplicity, during the Kenduli Mela in Birbhum. This mela offers a golden opportunity to witness their alluring performance.
Another tourist attraction near Kenduli is the Ballavpur Wildlife Sanctuary. It has many deer, jackals, foxes and water birds. Overall, Kenduli is an ideal place that offers an insight of folk culture of West Bengal.
