Sriniketan

Sriniketan

The Visva Bharati University, founded by Rabindranath Tagore, has two campuses, one at Shantiniketan and another at Sriniketan. Sriniketan is located at Surul at the distance of about 3 km from Shantiniketan. Sriniketan was established as a rural reconstruction center in the year 1922. It was inaugurated on 6th February, 1922. Leonard Elmhirst was the first Director. It had a prominent Adult Education component and also houses an agricultural college.

Main purpose of establishment of Sriniketan was to promote the rural development and to help the villagers. An emphasis was put on the scientific study of the village problems and then solutions were attempted. It focuses on adult education, agriculture, cottage industries, village welfare and handicrafts. Rural Co-Operative Stores sell the handicrafts like kantha embroidery, batik, weaving, dhokra metal-ware, bell metal products, terracotta pottery and leather goods.

A new type of school meant for the children of neighboring village, Siksha-Satra, was started in 1924 at Shantiniketan. In 1927, it was shifted to Sriniketan. Sriniketan also houses the Lok-Siksha Samsad started in 1936 and Siksha-Charcha established in 1937. Lok-Siksha Samsad is an organization meant for propagation of non-formal education and Siksha-Charcha is meant for training the village school teachers.

Sriniketan is open for 10.30 to 12.30 during winters, and 8.00 to 10.00 am during summers. This place will surely fascinate the tourists for its underlying greatness.
