Tarapith

There are numerous tourist spots near Shantiniketan. Located at a distance of about 80 km from Shantiniketan, Tarapith is famous for its sacred Tara Devi Temple. To get to Tarapith, one has to get to Rampurhat from Bolpur either by train or bus. Then, one could take cycle rickshaw or bus to cover the next 5 km.

Tarapith is a popular center of Tantric Hinduism, which is a system of esoteric practices applied for both fulfillment of worldly desire and attainment of spiritual experiences. The shrine is devoted to the mighty Goddess Tara (a form of Goddess Kali). This temple was built by a merchant namely Joyabroto, following his vision of Shakti. The idol of the Goddess is decorated with sacred threads and images of snakes. There is an image of Lord Shiva lying on her left lap and sucking her breast. According to the legend, Lord Shiva drank the poison gushed out during the churning of the ocean by demons and gods. Because of poison, his throat began to burn. At that time, Goddess Tara fed Lord Shiva with her breast milk and relieved him from the poisonous burns.

Plenty of devotees from all over the world visit this place to get respite from the earthly bindings and to gain the blessings of the Goddess. This temple is known for performing the tantric rituals. Some tantrism practitioners live near the temple. There are plenty of monkeys on the grove near the temple. The devotees can stay in the pilgrim's inn, close to this temple.

Tarapith is the must visit sacred place in Shantiniketan to achieve the spiritual peace.
