Visva Bharati University

Shantiniketan is a small university town of West Bengal. It is mainly popular for its reputed university namely Visva Bharati University, founded by Rabindranath Tagore. Its tranquil atmosphere, open-air classes and vast campus grounds attract plenty of visitors from all over the world. This university was established on 22nd December 1901. It was declared as 'An Institution of National Importance' and a Central University in May 1951, by an Act of Parliament. This university is located in the district of Birbhum, at a distance of about 160 km from Kolkata. The closest airport is at Kolkata, and the closest railway station is at Bolpur (Shantiniketan).

Visva Bharati University features two campuses, one at Shantiniketan and another at Sriniketan. The institutional buildings and departments of this university are distributed among these two campuses. This UGC recognized university is a member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). The Paridarsaka (Visitor) of this university is the President of India and the Pradhana/ Rector is the Governor of West Bengal. The Acharya/ Chancellor and the Upacharya/ Vice-Chancellor of this university are appointed by the President of India. The range of studies offered by this university is wide, emphasizing on dance, music, art and humanities.

The campus of Visva Bharati University is an interesting combination of murals, paintings, frescoes, sculptures and artistic tributes to Rabindranath Tagore, Ramkinkar, Nandlal Bose, Bindobehari Mukhopadhyaya, etc. Various departments in the university are Kala Bhawan (one of the best fine arts colleges in India), Shiksha Bhawan (Institute of Science), Rabindra Bhavan (Institute of Tagore Studies), Sangeet Bhavan (Center of Dance, Music and Drama) and China Bhavan (Center of Chinese Studies). Following the Gurukul traditions, the classes are conducted outdoors. It is wonderful to see the students assembling under the shady trees.

The campus of Visva Bharati University houses the Uttarayan Complex, the abode of Tagore family. Rabindranath Tagore lived in this place and from here he created many of his great literary works. The Vichitra Museum and Art Gallery displays the writings, paintings and sketches of Rabindranath Tagore. Some wonderful musical events were held in the campus, which includes the dance dramas written by Rabindranath Tagore.

Various diploma, degree and certificate courses are offered by this university. It provides good infrastructure facilities to the students including 52 hostels, 4 guest houses, 2 libraries and 2 hospitals. It has about 26 associates.
